The 13 card game Rummy is one of the most popular variants among Rummy enthusiasts. Before you learn Rummy online and play for free or real money, it is essential to know the basic terminologies used in Rummy games. Below are listed all the Rummy terms that you must know before joining the table.

·    Buy-In: The amount of cash a player puts in to enter into a tournament. There are different types of tournaments, and each has a limited range of buy-in where the minimum and maximum are specified.

·   Closed Deck: At the start of the game, 13 cards are dealt to the players. The remaining undealt cards are known as closed deck. The undealt cards are placed face down.

·   Joker: After 13 cards are dealt to each player, the next card drawn from the closed deck is a joker. This card is placed face-up under the closed deck. The cards of the same rank from all suits are a joker.

·   Deal: The cards dealt to every player by a dealer at the start of the game is known as a deal.

·   Dealer: Dealer refers to the person who distributes the cards to each player at the beginning of the game.

·   Deck: A deck is a pack of cards. Each deck has 52 cards which consist of 4 suits: Hearts, Diamonds, Spades and Clubs. Each suit consists of 13 cards.

·   Declare: When a player completes the objective of 13 card game rummy, they declare their hand by putting a 14th card face down in the discard pile.

·   Discard: After a player draws a card from the closed deck, the player has to get rid of one card by putting it face up in a discard pile.

·   Discard Pile: Discard pile is placed next to the closed deck. It is a pile of cards discarded by the players. It is also known as an open deck. A player can only pick up the card at the top of the discard pile, not the cards under it.

·   Draw: In every turn, a player must draw a card either from the closed deck or the discard pile.

·   Drop: Players in online Rummy have a chance to drop the game either at the beginning or in the middle. They can drop the game if a player thinks that their cards are not good enough to make valid sets or sequence. This helps a player minimize their losses.

·   Meld: A set or sequence is known as a meld.

·   Melding: Arranging the cards into sets or sequence.

·   Sequence: A sequence is made up of three or more consecutive numbers.

·   Pure Sequence: A pure sequence is a group of cards belonging to the same suit arranged in a series without using the joker. For example- 2-3-4 of Hearts is a sequence.

·   Impure Sequence: A sets of cards in which a joker is used to make a series of three or more cards.

·   Set: A set is a group of three or more cards of different suits but the same rank. For instance, 5s from any of the suits can make a set.

·   Shuffling: The mixing of cards before dealing.

·   Deadwood Cards: When an opponent declares the game, the cards which a player is not able to make into valid sets or sequence is known as deadwood cards. The losing player is charged with the penalty points of the unmatched cards.

·   Winner: A player who declares their hand into valid sets or sequence is declared as the winner of the game.  

·   Wild Card:  A wild card can be used as a joker to make sets or sequence. The wild card is selected randomly.
