At first glance, Gin Rummy seems to be quite a simple game, pick a card and discard. Simple, right? Well, the game is easy to learn, but difficult to master in order to increase the odds of winning. A player must think strategically. Below are the top 5 Gin Rummy strategies to follow in order to be  successful in the game. The strategy of this variant is somehow similar to the online rummy basic strategy.

Discard cards

A player should be aware of which card has been discarded. Pay attention to the cards your opponent is discarding and the card they pick up from the discard pile. The advantage of paying attention to the discard cards is to be aware of what is left in the deck. For instance, if two Kings have already been discarded, then you shouldn’t hold any King in your hand. The best cards to discard are the ones that neither you want nor your opponent.

Avoid the discard pile

A player should draw a card from the stockpile rather than from the discard pile. This makes it difficult for the opponent to keep a track of the cards in your hand. The odds will be in your favor if you draw a card from the stock. The exception to pick from the discard pile only benefits the player if it completes a set or run, especially if you’re going to lay down the cards immediately.

Middle cards

Middle cards are far more strategically valuable than low or face cards as we can use them in more runs and sets. A middle card like 7 can be used in more combination than any other value in the deck. If you have a middle card try not to discard it too early in an online game as it can help the opponent. Ace and King are less valuable cards as they can only be added at one end, whereas 7 can be added with 5-6, 6-8, or 8-9.

Discard the high cards

One should get rid of the high cards as soon as possible that do not match any of your melds to decrease your deadwood count. A player should replace K, Q, J, and 10 with low cards as this will remove half of the deadwood points. Your opponent is also likely to discard the high cards at the start of the game. If you have a combination of two Q’s, don’t wait for another Q for too long. It is uncommon that your opponent might knock in the first few turns only. So, discarding a high card and going for low cards will work out in the long run.

Knock early

Rather than trying to lower down your deadwood count, it is best to knock as soon as you can to avoid the risk of an undercut. A player should knock early rather than playing for Gin. If you have a chance to knock in the first few turns, do it before your opponent has the chance to get rid of his high cards. One of the interesting features in Gin strategy, compared to online rummy strategy is that you have the option to knock out instead of forming all your cards into sets or runs. You can only knock out if your point’s value in your deadwood cards is ten points or less. The longer you delay, the more chances you are giving to your opponent to beat your knock.

These are some highly effective strategies that work in every Gin rummy game and by following these you will be able to increase your odds of beating your opponent during the next Gin game. The main skill that helps a player to win in this game is a good memory. Regardless of your playing strategy, to become a successful Gin player you need to watch and remember the cards your opponent picks up and discards.
